Osteopathy
Jump to: Osteopathy | Manual Osteopathic Therapy
Osteopathy is a safe and effective patient centered manual therapy which works in combination with the individuals own homeostatic mechanisms to help restore balance and optimal health. It works with the understanding that the way the body is able to function is inseparable from the way it is structured.
Clients are treated in thin, stretchy clothing that allows for ease of palpation and movement. Osteopathic Practitioners support the body’s ability to restore and maintain health by using skilled palpation and gentle manual techniques to influence muscles, joints, nerves, connective tissue, circulation and internal organs. Osteopathy is drug and surgery free. It optimizes the body’s ability to heal itself and achieve balance.
Osteopathic Practitioners can help all ages if you are experiencing problems such as:
- Neck and back pain and tension
- Headaches
- Sleep or energy issues
- Sports injuries
- Concussion
- Injuries from car accidents
- Repetitive strain injuries
- Joint or muscle pain
- Digestive, respiratory or menstrual problems
- Pre and post-natal support
- Jaw dysfunction
- Post surgical care (ie. Joint replacement surgery)
- Colic, plagiocephaly, torticollis, and sleep disorders in infants and children
- Also great for mothers during and post pregnancy

Manual Osteopathic Therapy
Manual Osteopathic Therapy uses hands-on skills for investigation and treatment of structural and functional dysfunctions to restore balance to the body. Osteopathic techniques include Craniosacral, Visceral, Fascial, Manual Lymphatic Therapy, and Muscle Energy Techniques.
Manual Osteopathic Therapists take a holistic approach with thorough assessment of many body systems to determine the best plan to facilitate the body’s natural healing mechanisms. Treatments are typically done in different positions such as sitting, lying face up, face down, or side lying using supports when needed. Clients must wear plain stretchy clothing and/or shorts and a tank top so that they can be easily assessed and treated in different positions.
Imbalances found are gently treated with techniques that engage the dysfunctional tissue until function is normalized and alignment restored. Joints are mobilized by muscle-resisted techniques, soft-tissue is restored to healthier states. Fluids are released from congested areas and gently flushed in the direction of drainage. Changes are often felt immediately or shortly after the treatment. Manual osteopathic therapy techniques have been known to completely resolve chronic symptoms in patients who have sought help everywhere else.
The Manual Osteopathic College of Canada is recognized and licensed as a Type 2 World Health Organization (WHO) benchmark program.
Extended Medical Benefits:
Manual osteopathic therapy allows patients to tap into their Manual Osteopathic health benefits. The majority of insurance companies and health spending accounts recognize services offered by Manual Osteopathic Therapists.

James Wendland, BHK, MHK, MOT, PK
Manual Osteopathic Therapist, Kinesiology
James’ background in the human body began in sports as a child where he performed competitively in soccer, baseball, swimming, and rugby. While at college in 1998 he took a Kinesiology course and found his passion. Working with others to maximize performance and aid injury management / rehabilitation.
In 2003 he founded Kinesiologists.ca and ran this business till 2010 when new ownership took over. He has also had the joy of owning / operating fitness centers, most notably the Whistler Creek Athletic Club from 2008-2011. The Olympics were an incredible experience and the teams that trained out of the facility were eye opening to assist with. From Germany to Russia to France etc. The winter sport athletes showed what performance can be.
His teaching and instructing of future Kinesiologists during his roles as an Instructor at CapilanoU, UBC, Quest University, and as a sessional instructor here in Kelowna at UBC Okanagan, has involved an abundance of course offerings further enhancing my knowledge and understanding of human physiology and development.
James prefers payments in cash.
*Credit card fees will incur an additional fee of $11.65
*James bills ICBC directly for 30 minute Osteopathic based Kinesiology sessions.
If you have been in a car accident, you are automatically approved for 12 sessions.
His course offerings and teaching experience involved the delivering, development, and instruction of multiples sections in Exercise Prescription, Exercise Physiology, Strength and Conditioning, Human Anatomy, Athletic Injuries and Management, Human Growth and Development, Motor Learning, Motor Behavior, Sport History, Society and Sport, Health and Wellness, the basics, Intro to Kinesiology, Physical Education (Sport Theory and Coaching in Soccer, Volleyball, Basketball, Badminton, and Aerobic Dance).
During his Graduate work, James had the benefit of cadaver dissection through UBC medical school completing 1st year torso / organ dissection and 2nd year limb dissection with the 1st and 2nd year medical students. This was from complete, un-dissected cadavers providing him an intimate understanding of anatomy. During this time, he also instructed HKIN Functional Anatomy and Applied Physiology labs in human Kinetics focusing on the musculoskeletal systems.
In his team roles he has had an abundance of opportunities to apply and advance his skill set. For 6 seasons he assisted in the Vancouver Canucks pre-season fitness evaluation of players using the NHL and Team combine protocols. He also enjoyed appearing on the hockey series “Bell Making the Cut” as the Wingate guy (the one yelling, lol) completing the anaerobic evaluation of potential NHL players.
As a Strength Coach James has worked with Team Hockey developing young athletes from recreational to high performance levels. He also was lucky to be asked to work with the Vancouver Rowing Club as the youth development Strength Coach and Premier Team Strength Coach developing players across all spectrums of health and injury.
At UBC (Vancouver) James had the pleasure of being the Head Athletic Trainer for UBC Rugby for 2 years and then became the Head Athletic Trainer for UBC Football for an additional 2 years, during which time he went back to playing for UBC rugby. His endeavors and commitment here resulted in his acceptance into the UBC Big Block club for Varsity Athletes, Trainers, and Coaches.
This has provided James with a great deal of reward, as athletes he has worked with have been drafted into the NHL, students have gone on to fulfil their goals/plans, clients have found recovery and returned to a life either free of, or significantly reduced, in injury pain. His passion lies with training, rehabilitating, and developing individuals across all spectrums of life.
Currently James practices out of his private clinic in Kelowna as well as here at Tidal Elements as a Manual Osteopathic Therapist. He also teaches in the Manual Osteopathic Therapist (MOT) program through the Manual Osteopathic College of Canada (MOCC).
James looks forward to working with you!
