PRIOR TO COMING TO THE COURSE:
Use this outline of questions to write up information about your career since becoming an RMT. Be specific in your answers and be prepared to share your information with the other RMTs in a Communication Circle at this Professional Development Conference.

1. Since Graduating from your RMT program, where have you worked? Employed by a company/ Self Employed (business name, location, date began- end date)

  • What were the benefits of working at this location?
  • What were the weaknesses of working at this location?
  • What were the strengths that you acquired at this location?
  • Were there any bad habits that you acquired at this location?
  • Are you working at the most optimal location at present?
    • If yes, explain why.
    • If no, what specifically would you like to see change?

2. Name other types of Health Care Providers that you have worked with.

  • What were some modalities that you have learned from them?
  • What clinic lessons have other Health Care providers able to teach you?
  • Were there any conflicts you were confronted with while working with them?
  • How do their Ethics and Professional Boundaries compare to ours as RMTs?

3. Name all of the Continuing Educational Credits that you have acquired since graduating.

  • Which units have proven to be the most beneficial in your practice? Why?
  • Which units have proven to be the least beneficial in your practice? Why?
  • What direction have these CEC’s taken you in your practice? Explain.
  • How does your practice as an RMT differ from other RMTs that practice in the same area as you.

4. Have you had any learning blocks to modalities?

  • What do you struggle with?
  • Why does this bother you?
  • Is there something from the past that is holding you back from moving forward?
  • What did you do to move forward from these learning blocks?

5. Who have you had conflicts with regarding your practice? This could include clients, co-workers, employers, employees etc.

  • What is it about the circumstances that bother you the most?
  • Is there a personality trait within that person that you have a conflict with?
  • Is there something from the past that is holding you back from moving forward?
  • How did you use Conflict Resolution in these circumstances?

6. How has your body been feeling after this career in physical work?

  • Describe what pain, discomfort, or other sensations you are feeling in your body.
  • Point to the LOCATION that you are feeling these sensations in your body
  • How INTENSE is this sensation?
  • How LONG does this sensation typically last?
  • How OFTEN are you feeling this?
  • WHEN did this begin?
  • What AGGRIVATES this?
  • What ALEVIATES this?
  • Are there any Activities of Daily Living that have to be modified due to this?

7. What have you done to help maintain proper body mechanics, strength and endurance for yourself?

  • Examples: Yoga, Meditation, etc.
  • Have you bought Extended Medical?
  • Do you have Health Insurance in case you injure yourself at work or at play?

8. Have you had any “Burn Out” scenarios?

  • If so, what was the scenario? What did you do to get OUT of the scenario?
  • If not, what strategies have you used to insure you didn’t burn out?

9. Have you worked any other jobs that did not require the use of your RMT license?

  • If so, what job(s) did you take and why? What skills did you learn from said job(s) that were also applicable to you as a Registered Massage Therapist?

10. What aspects do you find to be most challenging as a Registered Massage Therapist?

  • Be specific (hours, rates, physical demand on the body, competition…)
  • Expand on how this affects your career.

11. What aspects do you find to be most rewarding as a Registered Massage Therapist?

  • Be specific (availability, prices, giving back, travel…)
  • Expand on how this affects your career.

12. What do you do to insure good follow up with you patients?

  • Do you personally call them the day after their first appointment to check in on how they are feeling post massage?
  • Do you give reminder calls the day prior to appointments in order to insure you have less “no show” appointments?

13. If you have owned your own Massage Therapy practice, what do you do (have you done) at Tax Season?

  • Do you do your own books? If so, what computer system do you use? Is it helpful/difficult…?
  • If so, how much time do you spend annually doing your taxes?
  • Do you have an office for this at your clinic, house… etc.
  • If not, do you have a bookkeeper/ accountant?
  • If so, how much money do you spend annually on a bookkeeper/accountant?
  • Are you paying HST at present?
  • If so, has this affected your patients at all? Explain.

14. What do you for advertising?

  • Have you listed yourself in the phone book? Newspaper?
  • Do you write thank you letters for referrals to your clinic?
  • Do you send out Birthday cards (or other cards) throughout the year?
  • Approximately how much do you spend annually on advertising?

15. What has been your experience with Supervision since being a RMT?

  • What type of professional guidance have you already set up for yourself in your career?
  • Have you had experience with a Supervisor guiding over top of you?
  • If so, what were some positive or negative situations? Additional comments.
  • Have you had experience with being a Supervisor to others?
  • If so, what were some positive or negative situations? Additional comments.
  • Referring to the topics already discussed in this workshop, why do you think it is important for RMTs to have a supervisor regardless of how long they have been practicing?
  • What type of professional guidance would you like to set up for yourself in the future?
